Fly Tipping – Householders Responsibilities

Fly Tipping continues to be a major problem in the Parish, causing resources to be diverted from other services to allow the rubbish to be cleared.

Last week alone the Parish Environmental Team removed 4 small scale fly tips, 5 larger fly tips were reported to Telford & Wrekin Council for removal and a large fly tip was reported to a private landowner for removal. The dumped rubbish was mainly assorted household waste, builders rubble and used car tyres.

A number of items giving personal details and addresses were removed from some of the fly tips and Enforcement Officers are following these up with a view to prosecution.

BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT HOUSEHOLDERS CAN BE PROSECUTED IF THEIR RUBBISH IS FLY TIPPED WITHOUT THEIR KNOWLEDGE.

Under the Environment Protection Act 1990 you must ensure that any waste collected from your home is taken by a registered waste carrier. If you don’t and your rubbish is fly tipped you can also be prosecuted even if you did not know it would be dumped. To make sure this doesn’t happen to you always check that anyone you use to remove rubbish from your home is a registered waste carrier by:

  • asking to see their waste carrier licence registration certificate
  • checking their details online at the Environmental Agency Website
  • Calling 08708 506506 and asking for a waste carrier validation check to be carried out
