Local charity Sight Loss Shropshire are excited to announce the launch of their new digital training on smart phones and tablets for people living with sight loss: ‘In Touch Telford. Tech Training for Visually Impaired People.’
An estimated 5,450 people across Telford & Wrekin are living with some form of sight loss. The RNIB projects that this figure will rise to almost 7,000 by 2032. More than 40% of blind and partially sighted people feel cut off from the people and things around them and 36% in this area never use the internet or don’t have access to it. There is a need for visually impaired people to gain confidence with handheld devices and integrated technology.
Initiated by former High Sheriff Selina Graham, the Telford community and Sight Loss Shropshire are responding to this need: ‘In Touch Telford’ want to create a positive, welcoming environment, based at the easily accessible Telford Centre library in Southwater, where people living with sight loss, as well as their friends and families, will be able to get first-hand experience on how to make best use of handheld devices like iPhones, iPads, Androids and tablets. Service users will be welcome to bring in their own devices or test out functions and options on demonstration equipment.
Visually impaired people will be able to attend drop-in sessions, or if they have specific questions or areas of interest, contact Sight Loss Shropshire in advance so trainers can prepare for the topic. Many of the volunteers at ‘In Touch Telford’ live with sight loss themselves and

Sight Loss Shropshire are also happy to invite visually impaired people living in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin to their ‘Spring Day Out’ on the 19th May. Each year the charity organises an unforgettable party for those living with sight loss, including a scrumptious lunch, a programme of light-hearted entertainment and lots of laughter at the Shrewsbury Town Football Club.
This year we are looking forward to welcoming musician Tony Wall, who loves entertaining with music of the 50s and 60s, and local storyteller Sal Tonge.
