Men aged 40 and over in the Lawley and Overdale Parish Council area are being encouraged to attend a free prostate health screening event this June to support early detection and help save lives.
A free PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing evening will take place on Monday 15 June 2026, from 6pm to 9pm at Lawley Community Centre.
The event is being hosted by Lawley and Overdale Parish Council in partnership with Shropshire Prostate Cancer Support Group.
Appointments must be booked in advance via timed slots, and no walk-in appointments will be available. Appointments are expected to fill quickly so eligible men are encouraged to book early to avoid missing out.
A PSA test is a simple blood test that can help identify potential prostate issues early, including prostate cancer, often before any symptoms appear. Detecting problems early can make a significant difference to treatment options and outcomes.
Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men in the UK, with around 1 in 8 men diagnosed during their lifetime. In many cases, there are no early symptoms, meaning men may feel completely well while still having the disease.
Councillor Mark Boylan, Chair of Lawley and Overdale Parish Council, said: “I’m proud that the parish council is supporting this vital service. I have had the test myself and can confirm it is a simple procedure that takes only a few minutes but could save your life.
If you are a man aged 40 and over, please consider booking an appointment and making PSA testing part of your regular health checks especially if you have a family history of prostate cancer, are of Black ethnicity (a higher risk group), or have any concerns about your prostate health.
Even if you feel completely well, it is still worth checking. A PSA test takes minutes but can make a life changing difference.”
Dennis Briggs, a member of Shropshire Prostate Cancer Support Group, said: “We are pleased to be working with Lawley and Overdale Parish Council to deliver this important service.
Prostate cancer is highly treatable when found early and bringing testing into the community helps remove barriers and encourages more men to get checked. We strongly recommend eligible men to take up this opportunity, even if they have no symptoms.”
The event is free to attend, with donations welcomed in support of the Shropshire Prostate Cancer Support Group, which provides non-medical support to men and families affected by prostate cancer and helps raise awareness of the importance of early testing.
